BOTM: ONE German Marathon Champion - part 1

Andy Kessler - 12-Nov-2018
Another month another BOTM. After I could avoid making a video myself for last month's BOTM, I managed to do so also for the  November BOTM, the ONE + that became 2018 German Marathon Champion. It's been a while since we have taken that video as we did several videos during one trip.

After a creative break and working on improving my Swiss humor, I will be back in December live in action be prepared.

Here we go, not really live from the beautiful Münstertal in the Black Forrest Germany:

I want to put a crown mounted dynamo powered light on my open up, but of course there is no place to put it there. Any suggestions on where to place a dynamo powered light on an up frame?

Hello everybody,

right now i am considering the purchase of a New Open and have some question left. Maybe you can help me out.

1. As i would like to have/save the possibility to go 2x on my bike and still have Di2 or Etap with it, without loosing out on the 650b 2.1 MTB-tyre thing for advanced gravel ... i had to learn, that Etap is not an option because of clearance issues due to the front derailleur. Thats hard for me, as i have a new set of Sram Red Etap hrd sitting here. If that is correct, there is only Shimano Ultegra Di2 8070 paired with a Ultegra Di RX rear derailleur left, right?

2. In order to have the chance to switch to a 1x setup, i checked the Easton EC90 SL Cinch crankset with the option to change between 1x and 2x setups. Another product advertising the same option would be the Praxis Zayante M30 Carbon crankset. My question goes out to, wheather you have realized such a build already ... does it work properly? And what about the q-factor and the chainline etc.pp.

3. Last question is about picking the right frame size. I am totally unsure about that one and there is no shop in the city with demo bikes, although stocking them.
I am 182cm with an 82cm inseam ... so legs a bit on the shorter side. My best fitting road bike is a 59 Storck Fenomalist from 2009 ... Stack 597/Reach 400 = 149 ... two spacers under a Syntace F119. To be honest, i have quite a history of shopping bikes ranging from a 54 Specialized Roubaix 2017 (neck problems and toe overlap) to a Yeti SB4.5 size L (fits good in my opinion). I also have a Storck TIX Pro in size M on which i am still undecided ... if it was a car, i would say i don‘t like the initial understeer when entering a corner ... the Fenomalist is a wonderfully balanced road bike. So if i take my personal Stack of 565.8 and divide it through lets say 1.475 i get an optimized Reach of 383, which puts it close to an Open UP size L Reach. If i was aiming at 1.5 STR, it moves to 373 Reach, making it a size M with the Open UP.
What do the experts think about my thoughts. I would like to pull the trigger on an UP, as i would like to reduce my bike park ;) without sacrificing too much ... only the Yeti SB4.5 is a definite keeper ... best ride ever for a MTB!

Best regards
Tom

Hi Tom,
many questions lets see if I can come up with some answers...
1. Yes right now ETAP will not work unfortunately so yes its either Ultegra or Durace DI2 with either a XTR DI2 RD or as you say RX DI2. If you ever consider single I would go for XTR as you can shift then a cassette up to 9-46 for example
2. both great cranks and both no problem with chainline switching around but its still a bit for work. The crank/chainring change is one thing but the probably also cassette and chain. So after all that would be something you would only a couple of times a year and not every other week.
3. You are 100% inline with my measurements and thats an Large. And yes in understand the YETI thing. Just sold my 4.5 and now building a SB100...
