When we design a bike, we want it to last. That may sound logical, but in today's consumer world, that isn't always the case. And what does that mean anyway? Of course we want it to be durable in the sense that it should survive years and years of use. That is really the easy part.
More difficult is making sure a frame is compatible with the drivetrains and other parts that will be introduced in the future. But most difficult, we want a frame to be compatible with the way we ride in the future.
The current line of OPEN bikes is probably the most future-proof I have ever designed. It's such a pleasure to still today hear from newly converted UP riders how much they love that bike, how big a step forward it is for them or how it has changed where and how they ride. Of course it helps that the UP shaped the performance gravel category. When that became the way so many people ride, it automatically made the UP compatible with that future.
Almost a new UP
What most people don't know is that in 2019, we were going to replace the UP. The frame was designed, molds made, first frames built. But Andy and I loved the UP so much that we just couldn't do it. And so the UP stayed as is.
This has happened several times. Designs were discarded, molds were scrapped, the UP continued. But 2019 was different, because we loved the "UP replacement" as well. And so it was launched anyway. Not as an UP, but as the brand-new WIDE. History proved us right, as the UP continues to be our most popular model. And the WIDE is a very close second, so there really is room for both.
In the years since, we have often found ourselves in a similar situation. We still love the UP, and we love the WIDE. We've added the MIND, which is obviously in a very different category as a road bike. Yet we do get asked when we bring out something "new", as constant product introductions are the standard in our industry (as it is in many).
But while you can bring out something new every year, you cannot really make a meaningful improvement every year. As Ferdinand Porsche used to say: Change is easy. Improvement is far more difficult.
Now the time has come. Sort of
The irony is that with every passing year, the UP becomes more iconic in a way. And thus, surpassing it with a new and better design becomes more difficult. I have found this to create quite a bit of pressure for me.
Normally for me, designing a new bike starts with the things I do not like about my current bikes. This has proven a very bad approach, as there still is very little I don't like about the UP, WIDE or MIND. An unusual situation, in the past it would often only take me a year to start to get really annoyed about some features of a bike.
In fact, I built up a new WIDE bike for myself just a few months ago. It had been a few years since I rode one extensively and I have to say, I was sorry it had been that long. I absolutely loved it and it reminded me of the very first rides I did with that bike together with Andy in Switzerland.
So instead of thinking about replacing any current model, I decided to think about different ways to ride and enjoy the bike. Gravel, road, even cargo, I designed all sorts of bikes. I also spoke with a lot of people in the industry to see what they are working on for the coming years. We're lucky that many suppliers in the bike industry seek out our opinion, so as a result, we know a lot about what is coming even 3-5 years into the future. That helps us ensure our models are future-proof for a long time.
The outcome of all these designs trickled down in not one, not two, not three but four new models. And over the course of the next 12 months, we will launch at least 2 of them. The others, who knows. After all, we have a reputation to uphold for killing projects just moments before launch.
These new models are not meant to replace our current models (we still love them too much), they will complement them. And if in the end, you - our customer - decides it is time we say goodbye to some of our classic models, of course we will listen. But something tells me that will be a while.

P.S. Speaking of future proof, there is one feature that we think will gain more prominence in the coming years, and that is the UDH rear derailleur and SRAM Transmission drivetrains. So all our new models will be compatible with that.
So we should expect a new MIND soon as well? Before end of year?
As one of my mentors used to say, "we perform miracles, but only one a day". Certainly no new MIND this year, we're in November already.
Really appreciate you guys' design direction and approach. Echoing many comments above. I'm truly yearning for a pure road bike, i.e. the Min.D with a touch more clearance without comprising the ride feel, responsiveness, compact reach/TT, chain stay length, or the higher-ish stack and overall geo. Not up to 38 but maybe up to 34? How might we design something that's nice and tight, and light, but provides just a hair more clearance? Also, I can live with the integrated seat mast but I wish the top clamp's saddle rails were not the Ritchey ones. I love and use a ton of Ritchey components but not a fan of those saddle rails. I think the Thomson Elite design is the best but using Enve's design wouldn't hurt. Given your guys' reputation, I imagine collaborating with either or both of those manufacturers would be fairly straightforward.

Ich hoffe eure Neuheiten kommen bald, da ich ein neues Rad benötige. Ich würde mich auf eine Neuaflage des W I D E freuen mit folgenden Features, nur einfach Antrieb wie gehabt, UDH, integrierte Leitungen, Storage im Rahmen, Laufrad nur 700c mit Reifenbreite 55 mm. Das wäre mein Traumrad. Grüße
55mm? -> MTB. Enve hat es mit dem MOG vorgemacht - mehr als 50mm und Road bzw Gravel-Kurbeln geht nicht. Und den Q-Faktor von Mountainbikes will keiner an einem Gravel-Rahmen.
Bringing a T47 BB and UHD would be incredible, especially on the MIND. I'm hoping that's the case so I can justify buying an OPEN in 2025!
When will there be more information about the new Open models?
When will you provide more details? My beloved Open U.P. was stolen literally a week before your announcement of the upcoming new models. Now my decision process has gotten so much harder… (UDH is a huge differentiator, therefore really keen to understand whether I need to look for an interim solution)

Really interested to see where this goes - I love my UP and Wi.De and am keen for a light climbing bike - M.ind with UDH etc... This is my next Open... However, I recently added the Cane Creek 'Inverted' shocks to my Wi.de and love this option - However it did make it challenging to get the geometry sorted - that extra 40mm meant a bit of work to get the bike back into a nice position - In the end had to totally slam the new forks and move the seat forward to its limit - Would love for there to be an option to get a Wi.de frame that has UDH, T47, internal storage and the capacity to handle gravel forks! And as you said earlier - stay with the Mullet but utilise the new Red shifters and brakes! 12x is fine in this config ;-)
It would be great to have mounts on the fork that would allow carrying bike bags. I use my Open UP for bikepacking, and would prefer fork mounted bags to a handlebar bag.
After careful consideration of the various framesets on the market at the moment, I 've come to the conclusion that a MIND is going to do it for me. We live in the mountains so a solid climber fits the bill . Therefore as soon as you produce the MIND with a T47 and UDH compatible drop outs, my credit card will in the hand of your dealer. So please, please make the Boy the FRAMESET.
I´ve been riding the OPEN UP since 3 years now, and it profoundly changed the way I enjoy cycling. For the first time ever, there was no need to change anything during those 30k+ kilometers I´ve been riding on my OPEN (all-Beast, Force/XX1 Mullet 9-50), it felt like tailor-made from the very first moment. You did a great job, guys. Having said this - there would remain just 3 wishes which, if fulfilled, would make me decide building a new OPEN (aside from UDH, wich will soon be a must-have, even for mullet configurations): 1. Don´t change the UP geometry 2. Fully internal cable routing, because it´looks nice and it is easier to mount bikepacking bar bags 3. Keep the green color :) Also, I´d rather merge UP and UPPER to something woven like the Racemax Italia. And, maybe, even if it would make you feel unfocused: You should think about offering an integrated cockpit with options like aerobars (for bikepacking) etc. Thanks for your awesome contributions to cycling & keep on innovating :) Joerg
Biggest wishlist items by far would be: T47 BB integrated downtube storage 2X capability (including Di2) UDH integrated cables solid color selections or even possible customer customization no silly proprietary "aero" seatposts. Simple, round, with a simple clamp.
UDH is good, but we need T47 bottom brackets! Everyone hates press fit.
I would like to see T47 and UDH as bare minimum. Clear weight limit listed per frame/fork at least 300lb system weight (bonus rider weight, take a look on Enve frames FAQ section, they claimed it). Bump the quality control, calipers, bottom bracket interface everything nice faced and square.
since I have build my Wi.De my road bike was sold and my MTB is bored in the corner - I really love it. The only thing I am missing are the integrated mounts on the fork to take it bikepacking with some extra mini panniers. More raw versions would spark my interest too!

As a long-time OPEN fan, I would love to see an evolution of the UP/UPPER into a fast endurance version with base gravel capability for long (multi-day) rides. It could combine a geometry mix of the Caledonia and WIDE, offer 42 mm tire clearance and fenders, BB T47 and internal frame storage. Light and sleek like the UP/UPPER, with some aero optimizations—nothing revolutionary, just the perfect balance between long-ride comfort, fun and flexibility. Maybe one of these new models could be that dream bike?! I'll be eagerly following the upcoming news. In the meantime, many thanks for the great announcement!

Hi Bijal, I still love my WIDE, that won't change. If the WIDE is in the sweet spot of what you want, then the new models won't likely change that.
I love my U.P. Only miss a few small things to make it perfect: real fender mounts and room for 700c x 45mm (ish). Otherwise I’m very happy with my bike. Nice to learn about the product development going on👍🏻

YES! cannot wait. I am far from sold on the Red XPLR cassette however. I love my mullet Red/Eagle XX1 build on my WIDE and can't imagine giving up the 50T here in socal so bailouts. I run a 42T in front and don't spin out super often except on rippin road descents. rarely going fast enough on gravel descents to spin out and in group rides with knobbys you have hard enough time not falling out the back lol.
For the tougher rides, mullet remains a good solution. And you can use the new Red shifters with Eagle Transmission to make Mullet, it's just that it will be 12-speed, not 13-speed.
I own several bikes. Road and gravel. By far my favorite is the WI.DE. That being said, the perfect next step would be: -Wider tire clearance -Internal cable routing -Internal Frame storage -UDH -Threaded BB Can’t wait to upgrade my Wi.DE with version 2.0

I love my wi.de. It is my first own build. Going UDH is fantastic news. I have one wish for the new generation: What about a threaded BB? Maybe it is a few gramms heavier, but so much easier for maintanance.

Internal cabling ... Limited choice on the stem/headset/bars & a pain when servicing - no thanks. In truth - the UP doesn't need very much doing to it .. maybe a few mm tyre clearance although there is the WIDE for that. Longer reach / shorter stem is the fashion ... Maybe, clearance for a crank arm power meter - having said that Stages look to be in trouble .. UDR seems to make sense for long term compatibility
You're right, there is a small fashion trend towards that longer reach/shorter stem, but that just moves these bikes more towards being bad mountain bikes instead of good gravel bikes on a wide range of terrain. Anyway, there's something for everybody with the wide range of gravel bikes now on the market.

Not sure about 5DEV but I am wondering if a non-UDH frame is sufficiently strong enough in that area to be reliable at whatever stress/strain that would be imparted in normal use and/or at the typical highest expected stress/strain. The fact that a derailleur hangar can bend (accommodate strain) without breaking the frame is both an annoyance and a godsend. It seems to me that 5DEV might have been shut down by SRAM and/or Specialized due to concerns with liability if/when something broke. Perhaps Specialized did something to the new Crux frame to reinforce that area for UDH compatibility.

I am not quite sure what happened with 5Dev, they are not offering that option anymore. Not sure if that was a legal or technical issue, but I think our dropouts are too wide to make that work. But I will look into that a bit more.
Hi Gerard, I would love to see you offer some new colors and one of them being a simple matte or clear coated carbon finish with your logo (a more finished version of the RTP). Many of us like the raw carbon look, but with a little more protection a clear coat or matte coat would provide. That would also be part of the future proofing nature of the new frames.
That can probably be arranged!
Hi Andy, hi Gerard, are you planning on producing some of the Open frames in Europe in the future? Similar to the Italia models of the Racemax and the Extrema. I am considering the MIN.D. for my next bike and I would really love for it to be produced in Europe. I hope you keep the geometries of the new models very similar to the ones you have now. All sounds nice until the Titanium part. Why would we do that? We could never achieve our weight or longevity with Ti (yes, a great material in standardized fatigue tests, but as a welded structure, it cannot beat a carbon composite as frame tests have shown many times). Anyway, if Ti is what you're looking for, of course that's great, there are plenty of fine manufacturers of Ti frames, but OPEN won't be one of them.
Love my U.P.! It does well with double duty via separate sets of wheels for road and gravel; However it really needs to be in full-time gravel mode and to have a road bike stablemate with clearance for 700x32c, UDH and downtube storage would be great! Almost pulled the trigger on a M.I.N.D. but the seat mast concerns me for transport (I'm 197 cm)...
I could understand your concerns. Probably if you're at 85cm saddle height or below, it wouldn't be any problem in transport with something like the Scion bag we mention in the specs. But I can understand it gives you pause.

I'm seeing the sheen of a titanium, or is that just flashes reflection on an RTP. the I can't imagine Open would deviate from weight & shaping advantage of a Carbon layup?

I am currently riding my second UP(per) , this time the Rene Herse Special Edition. After my initial Orange up. These two bikes and also the way of thinking about tubeless and Rene Herse tires , have changed my way of riding. Nice , smooth long and calm away from roads. You both have done something which made me and others happy. After so much pathos on a Friday night ——can’t wait to see the new models. 😀

Bin sehr gespannt, was da kommen wird. UDH ist schon einmal toll. Aus dem Stehgreif fällt mir nichts ein, was ich am WI.DE vermisse oder ändern würde. Es ist nach wie vor ein tolles Fahrrad und zaubert bei jeder Fahrt ein Lächeln ins Gesicht. Auch optisch für mich eines der schönsten (subjektiv natürlich das schönste!) Gravelbikes auf dem Markt.

Pretty interested in UDH as well. I build a 1x12 setup, Force AXS XPLR derailleur and 11-46 Rotor cassette but hat to bend the derailleur hanger to get it working properly…still not completely satisfied. So UDH sounds promising.
Yep, I think that sort of jumping through hoops will soon be something of the past.

Unlikely. For that purpose, I bought a Bike Friday. They have a nice gravel travel bike.

To complement an existing line of models counts as improvement and not just change (Porsche), if you ask me. The improvement must be sought in the new and different ways to ride and enjoy the bike that you have envisioned, isn’t it? This is exiting! Back in 2016 (2015 ?) the UP gave birth to a whole new category (performance gravel), so do I understand it correctly: you are in fact announcing new categories again?
Hi Michiel, I think what happened with the UP was a once in a lifetime experience. In fact it is partially what has kept us from creating a new UP, as nothing else could take such a leap. So I don't think we can create such a new category with also such a wide appeal. The thing is, in 2015, we knew from the start that gravel would get this big. We told everybody gravel would one day eclipse road, we invited product managers from many other brands to our SeaOtter booth, told them our ideas and tried to convince them to make performance gravel bikes too. It took a while but it happened eventually. I don't think there is currently an idea out there that could open up (no pun intended) a new category like that.

I just built an WIDE this last month. Its the fastest, most comfortable bike I've ever owned. So quick on gravel, so compliant and so light. It really is a unicorn bike! Can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeves. If only my pockets weren't empty from this last build!

I’m pretty hype over the switch to a UDH design. Been riding a Wide for the last 4 years. I haven’t found another bike that I’d rather ride but would love to utilize the new sram xplr 13sp group when that launches. Also hoping for a dropped seat stay design for more rear end compliance 🤞🏼

Very exciting, I absolutely love the wide, my wish though and maybe I am a bit short sighted for all the other option I can have and I don’t know about:), is for bit more clearance for 700x50 maybe?, a tiny bit steeper head tube angle (like the up?!) udh, and other trendy features like frame compartment and so on, all this but without the any lost of the ride quality ❤️🙏🏽
Seeing that UDH hanger made me wonder if you had an option for a direct mount hangers for Shimano mechs to loose the extra knuckle. ?

In any case, I won't be giving up my UPPER. I love it so much. Now my question: is carbon Fiber still your material of choice?

I have admired OPEN since coming across the brand in 2018 and have been the VERY happy owner of a 3T Exploro for more than 4 years. I live in the Teton Valley and run the gamut from fast gravel to chunky Forest Service roads. I have been riding the WI.de for 4+ years now and have been thinking about an OPEN that would take wider tires on 700 wheels and a slightly slacker geo for rough descents. Now you have me waiting with bated breath; can we hope to see an OPEN WI.der? People are bikepacking or just riding tougher terrain and many have had to go to hardtails. Hope to see you enter this niche market with tires and geo as the solution!
I absolutely love my UP. Only downside, the S frame is slightly too big for me :( It‘s okish, but maybe in the future there will be XS frames available.

Please don't discontinue mechanical shifting! So many bike brands are going electronic only frames which sucks for the consumer that still loves the tactile feel of a mechanical shifter.
Please keep at least mechanical 1x!
With a 1by drivetrain its only 1x cable .. and cheaper .. . and reliable ... and my preference
I have nothing against cable-shifting (I have a Campy Ekar road bike) but the reality is that the best drivetrains are now electronic. Not because they are electronic, but because all the improvements are going into the electronic groups, the top groups just aren't coming in mechanical versions anymore. And if that process has only just started, it will speed up in the coming years.
Very excited to see what you have in store for us! After seeing unreleased gravel bikes at Unbound sporting UDH and Transmission drive trains I truly believe that’s the correct direction for gravel bikes!
it's very cool how long the U.P. has lived - what year was it initially released? would love to see a timeline of other brands' models that have come and gone during the U.P.'s lifetime.
Hi Brandon, I love that too about the UP. That's one of the reasons it's my all-time favorite... or one of them anyway :-). It was launched at SeaOtter 2015, so it will definitely complete the decade.
There will not be a conversion kit to UDH for the UP and MIND, WIDE frames? I usually replace frames every year, but have been riding my UP rtp since 2020…. I can’t get myself to replace it🫣
A conversion kit is not possible, there is no space inside the current dropout for UDH (plus for UDH the frame sits further outside of the center plane.
Pretty interested in that one too. I have been playing around with a one by setup, force axs xplr derailleur and 11-46 Rotor cassette. Had to bend the derailleur hanger to get it to work properly, still not totally satisfied. So UDH sounds pretty promising.
Thank you so much! I still love my UP, it is by far my favourite bike. But I also feel this urge to get a new bike (I have my UP since April 2018 now...), but the one thing that held me back from buying an UPPER was the UDH compatibility. I guess my new bike project will finally be happening - a new Open Frame, Beast one piece bar/stem combo, Beast seat tube (unless the new bike is integrated), Bike Ahead BiTurbo wheels and the new SRAM RED XPLR that should launch shortly... this is the dream combo that would be a worthy successor to my old Open UP with SRAM Force/Rival mix.

Guys, you sure know how to build a clifhanger:) Just finished my first open wide build and super excited to see what you‘ve got up your sleeve for the next generation of open bikes. Revolution, evolution or whatever it‘s gonna be. Maybe a bit of both. Just keep on breaking some rules and thinking outside the box, really appreciate your work!

Good news :-) - UDH is cool and a must following SRAM's product strategy with the "announced" 13s gravel group. My question: Internal or external cable/hose routing?
