Modern Classic.

A very different OPEN that answers the same question: What do we want to ride?

Photography: @marcgaschphotography
We love cutting edge engineering but we also love the classic bike aesthetic. The MIN.D. combines both.

The joy of riding starts even before the first pedal stroke, as its lightness, sleek appearance and midnight blue sheen with subtle color accents put a smile on your face.

On the bike, you experience a rare mix of performance and comfort. Every gram has a function. Beyond it is nothing, except endless roads unknown.

The MIN.D. (MINimal Design); it exists because it’s the road bike we want to ride.

What's on our MIN.D.?

Comfort.

Comfort is not about gimmicks or sub-atomic vibration damping graphene-infused nano-particles. Its about helping you ride further while enjoying it.

Proper fit is paramount for comfort. Our geometry is sportive (we still want to go fast) but with a realistic saddle-to-handlebar drop and reach.
Bad roads are comfort killers through cracks, potholes and vibrations. Space for 30-33mm road tires is the most effective comfort boost while also improving rolling resistance and grip.
Finally, we create comfort through the frame shape and layup. Through endless testing, we tuned our ultra-thin continuous seattube/seatmast and seatstays for maximum compliance.

Continuous Seattube.

The extremely slender 25mm* continuous seattube adds astonishing comfort to the frame.

* 30mm is the minimum size for a seattube to fit the thinnest available (27.2mm) seatpost inside.

Continuous fibers from bottom bracket to saddle in a very thin tube allow for more compliance at the saddle and superior vibration dampening.
The continuous seattube means you do not have an area where a seatpost is inserted into the seattube and clamped. Such an area of overlapping tubes would effectively double the material and kill the compliance.
For those worried about travel with a seatmast, don't be. The Scion Aerocomfort 3.0 is our all-time favorite bag, it fits the MIN.D. up to 80cm saddle height with saddle installed (85cm with saddle removed. You don't even have to turn or remove the bars and it fits all your gear!

Our carbon layup.

So many marketing claims about carbon. Yet the truth is quite simple.

Every bike company has access to the same carbon. Compared to industries like aviation, carbon volume for bikes is too small for custom or exclusive. So all those different names for proprietary carbon are just that, names.
What matters: high-modulus carbon is stiff but brittle, low modulus carbon is more flexible but tougher. You need stiff and tough, so the best layup is a blend and the ratio depends on what is most important in each area of the frame.
In some areas (main tubes for example), the blend has more high modulus (and even ultra-high modulus) carbon. Other areas (headtube for example) use more of the tough carbon. That’s how our frames are both light and durable.

RTurn.

OPEN was the first to truly optimize a fork for flatmount brakes with its Smartmount connection.

Standard, the bike industry uses four bolts plus an adaptor to attach the brake caliper to the fork. This allows for flipping between 140mm and 160mm rotors.

However, SRAM and Shimano both always recommend 160mm for the front, so we remove the adaptor and two bolts to attach the caliper directly onto the fork for that rotor size.

This makes the setup lighter, stiffer, safer. (Check our Specifications for the correct bolt lengths for each setup.)

This design also cleans up the R-Turn fork legs and allows us to make a very light structure with very tunable stiffness and strength.

Simplicity.

This is the essence of the MIN.D. As Dieter Rams said: As little design as possible.*

* We highly recommend the documentary↗ and the book↗.

This is a pure road bike, and nothing more. Simply because it doesn’t have to be anything else. (and yet many take it on fast gravel and love it, Gerard included).

Design is in the details.

Reviews & Awards.

“Open MIN.D Is a Road Bike Like Few Others. Why I fell for this radically conventional road bike: Radially conventional light and stiff frame, Long-ride geometry ideal for going up and down big-mountain passes, Throwback round tubes give it a pleasing ride on rougher roads”

– Bicycling

“MIN.D. California: A purist’s absolute dream bike, stiff, light with superb handling and classic, minimalist looks. But you’re gonna have to pay.”

– Cyclist

“The MIN.D. is focussed on what's important: having fun riding! As a modern road bike all-rounder, the MIN.D isn't above hunting down KOMs or an outing on the next forest track. The agile and playful handling in combination with its sprinting abilities make it a fun machine on winding roads. The continuous seat tube, which removes the need for a traditional seatpost and clamp, has a lot of compliance, and together with the 700 x 32C wide Schwalbe Pro One tires and a moderately stretched riding position, contributes to a very balanced level of comfort.”

– Design & Innovation Award

“The OPEN MIN.D. is a harmonious road bike concept that sensibly combines classic and minimalist aesthetics with modern technology. The bike isn’t as revolutionary as the UP, but it strikes a perfect balanced between sportiness and comfort, whether on asphalt or the occasional gravel road short-cut. If you appreciate extravagant yet understated design, prefer agile handling and don’t want to commit yourself to a single type of terrain or distance, the frame set of the OPEN MIN.D. will make a good basis for your dream bike.”

– Granfondo

“Besides spot-on handling, most impressive was how designer Gerard Vroomen was able to suffuse such modern-day performance and technology into a veritable less-is-more, package. Between the 25mm integrated seat tube, room for 32mm ties, small diameter tubes and subtle, multi-colored flare inside the forks and seatstays, the Open checked all the boxes.”

– RoadBikeAction Editor’s Choice - Best Road Bike

“Its combination of characteristics made the bike a delight to ride around the narrow, technical lanes I’m lucky to live amongst. The Min.D was light enough to make their 20% gradients manageable and stable enough to pilot down twisting, narrow descents with confidence. Plus the often broken road surface was no match for the bike’s big tyres. In short the Min.D has opened up new avenues and in so doing made riding a road bike a pleasure for me once again.”

– Cyclist Best of the Best - Endurance bikes

“Brilliant frameset for fast climbing, and it's comfortable too. Overall, the Open MIN.D is absolutely fantastic. It balances stiffness with comfort that can really be felt on rough roads. The handling is razor sharp, making this a fun bike to ride both uphill and back down.”

For Shimano Di2, the minimum achievable saddle height (due to the Di2 battery fit inside the seatmast) is listed in the geometry table.

Please note the seatmast inside diameter reduces above the toptube, so you need enough seatmast length to fit the Di2 battery. Check in the frame before cutting the seatmast.

  4. The length of seatmast needed to install a Shimano Di2 Battery results in this minimum achievable saddle height (including safety margin).
  5. Standover to the top of the toptube directly above the BB (varies with tire size).
  6. Normalized dimensions to compare to frames with standard (non-zero-offset) seattubes.
